CLC Newsflash! LCC les Dépêches!

The CLC sends out periodic newsflashes to keep our membership informed of CLC activities and composer opportunities. We currently send out materials in the language in which it is received; our intention in the future, once we have sufficient resources, is to send out messages in both official languages.

1) Follow-up to e-mails regarding motion M-297

Hello,

To follow up on our previous emails regarding motion M-297, we wish to
notify you that the vote was held last Wednesday, June 17, at the House of
Commons.

Motion M-297, which asks for the reinstatement of funding in arts and
culture and an increase in the annual budget of the Canada Council for the
Arts, was agreed by the majority of attending MPs.

The detailed results of the votes are available on this webpage:

http://www.parl.gc.ca/

We wish to acknowledge your involvement in the last few weeks, which
contributed to raise awareness about this issue. We would also like to thank
you for forwarding us the answers you received.

To our knowledge, 86 MPs received letters, of which:
- 32 MPs from the Liberal Party ;
- 27 MPs  from the Conservative Party;
- 16 MPs from the Bloc Québécois ;
- 10 MPs from the New Democratic Party ;
- 1 independant MP.

Altogether we listed 172 sent letters, of which:
- 110 in Québec ;
- 26 in British Columbia ;
- 23 in Ontario ;
- 4 in Saskatchewan ;
- 4 in New Brunswick ;
- 2 in Yukon ;
- 2 in Alberta ;
- 1 in Manitoba.

Although this vote is mainly symbolic (the current governement is not
compelled to follow the Parliament's opinion), it is an important milestone
because all opposition parties have voted in favour of this motion.
Therefore, these parties must honour their commitment, in the event of an
upcoming election.

We are definitely looking forward to the Parliament's return in September.
In the meantime, is is our responsibility to make sure that our interests
are well represented in the Parties' respective cultural programs.

Do not hesitate to contact us, should you have any question or comment.

Best regards,
