The CLC sends out periodic newsflashes to keep our membership informed of CLC activities and composer opportunities. We currently send out materials in the language in which it is received; our intention in the future, once we have sufficient resources, is to send out messages in both official languages.

L’écriture pour la voix – un atelier de 3 heures pour les compositeurs

á Montréal le 9 fevrier

Nous vous invitons à participer à notre atelier sur l’écriture pour la voix. L’atelier, présenté par La ligue canadienne des compositeurs, a été conçu pour les compositeurs qui veulent approfondir leurs connaissances en composition pour la voix. L’atelier comprendra discussions et exemples présentés par Pauline Vaillancourt, soprano de réputation internationale reconnue pour son expérience unique avec les compositeurs vivants, et Christopher Butterfield, compositeur ayant à son actif plusieurs œuvres écrites pour la voix.

Les compositeurs (qu’ils soient débutants ou expérimentés) intéressés par l’écriture pour la voix, peu importe le contexte – opéra, cycles de chansons, travail multidisciplinaire – auront l’occasion d’explorer d’avantage les particularités et les défis qu’ils doivent rencontrer. Des sujets tels que le timbre, le registre, la rencontre du livret avec la musique, et l’extended techniques seront abordés. Pauline et Christopher discuteront de différentes subtilités et techniques, problèmes et pièges, concernant la notation et autres défis potentiels.

Composing for the Voice – a 3-hour workshop

in Montréal on February 9th

We invite you to participate to the workshop Composing for the voice. This workshop, presented by the Canadian League of Composers, is designed for composers who want to enhance their knowledge of composing for the voice. The workshop will feature discussion and examples on recording by Pauline Vaillancourt, a professional soprano with vast experience in performing the work of living composers, facilitated by Christopher Butterfield, a composer with experience in composing for the voice.

Composers (both emerging and established) who are interested in composing for the voice in any context – opera, song-cycles, multi-disciplinary work – will have the opportunity to gain insight into the specific challenges of vocal writing. Pauline and Christopher will discuss aspects such as range and register, text-setting, timbral nuances and extended techniques as well as issues around text-setting, notation and other challenges that arise in composing for the voice
