1) CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Canadian Section of the ISCM announces a "Call for Submissions" to Canadian composers and sound artists for the 2008 ISCM Festival in Vilnius, LITHUANIA.

A jury comprised of three composers and one non-voting Committee Chair will choose 6 works to represent the Canadian Section for 2008. These works will be submitted to the International Jury for possible selection/performance at the World Music Days.

The Canadian jury will pay particular attention to selecting works reflecting the Lithuanian Section's chosen "theme" for the festival; "InBetween - Contemporary music as transit zone and middle ground”. Each submission should include a written description of how the work coincides with this theme - applications without this description will be considered incomplete.

The International jury will give preference to works submitted by the National Sections, and there is no fee for submitting works to the Canadian Section. Works selected by the Canadian Section will be part of a promotional CD sponsored by the section, provided that appropriate authorization is given.

InBetween - Contemporary music as transit zone and middle ground

The festival theme wants to reflect on the multitude of positions any form of contemporary music can take today in the wider cultural landscape, and on the various ways through which the music of today reaches an audience. Throughout the last decades it has become clear that our contemporary music experiences are no longer to be confined to the concert hall alone, and that this music can share its audience with other artistic output. Moreover it seems that in these days of I-pods and internet radio, classical or contemporary music audiences might not have become bigger, but are certainly coming from a much wider base.

The ISCM World Music Days 2008 will therefore explore a multitude of ‘musics’ of today, with local and international performers, in the many concert halls, theatres and arts venues of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, hidden treasure of the Baltic, has to offer.

Central in this festival edition will be the music of ISCM members, and of two composers in focus – Jonathan Harvey (with an exciting world premiere) and Peter Eötvös (both as a conductor and a composer), as well as an exploration of new ways of presenting contemporary music to new found audiences, through multimedia, crossover programmes, installations, fringe programmes and interactive web-based content. To its foreign guests the festival wants to offer an outstanding showcase of the rich music life of the Baltic area.

New and newest music

The Gaida Festival, hosting ISCM World Music Days in 2008, is among the younger international new music festivals, and therefore strongly advocates the reaching out for a young audience. Presenting the music of the 20th and 21st centuries is one thing, bringing this music into the context of young people’s rich musical experience quite another. Of course we all agree there is no such thing as an ideal new music audience today, so a multitude of options is explored. In its recent editions, the Gaida festival has shown to be at the forefront of this endeavour. To some the vast number of youngsters in Gaida concerts might come as a surprise, but not to the (hip and internationally oriented) incrowd, which seems to have embraced the festival as its own.

Thus Gaida in the past welcomed such remarkable projects as London Sinfonietta meets Warp (a refreshing confrontation of 20C repertoire and electronica DJs from the popular WARP ‘electronica’ record label) or Microwaves (the artistic fusion of Italian ensemble Alter Ego ensemble and Finnish electronica artists Pan Sonic). Other ventures in this direction included an Opera in da House project, with exciting remixes of opera repertoire, the multimedia dance performance Time Line by the young Lithuanian composer Vytautas V. Jurgutis or the One, the quintessential video chamber opera by the young and successful Dutch composer Michel van der Aa, among many others.

Building on this track record, ISCM World Music Days 2008 want to extend its outward reaching policy by transforming the city of Vilnius into a musical platform for all to enjoy. There will be DJ-performances from a floating ‘island’ in Vilnius’s main shopping mall, giving a fresh look on some ‘New Music Classics’ such as the works of Reich, Glass and Stockhausen. We plan a reworking of Luciano Berio’s classic Laborintus II in which the improvisational element will lead into a jazz concert, followed by a Laborintus party, and we plan to bridge Jonathan Harvey’s quintessential electronic piece Mortuos Plango with the iPod generation trough a multimedia installation.


PROCEDURES FOR SUBMITTING ENTRIES

1. The Canadian Section of the ISCM may submit up to six works as an official submission. Composers from ISCM member countries can apply to their national ISCM sections.

2. Composers - especially those from countries not affiliated with the ISCM – may also apply individually to the international jury with one work. According to the rules of the ISCM, an entry fee of 50 Euros must be paid (see below "Method of Payment"). The payment must be referred to as entry fee for the "ISCM World Music Days 2008". Any submission will be disqualified if the entry fee is not received by the ISCM past the indicated deadline.

3. Publishers may only submit works with a letter of consent from the composer.

4. Only one submission per composer can be accepted, whether as part of an official submission by ISCM members or as an individual submission. Preference will be given to official submissions.

5. Applications are invited for all kinds of music:
- orchestra, string orchestra
- large sinfonietta-type ensemble
- chamber (from 1 to 8 instruments)
- vocal and choral
- multi-media, cross-media and sound installations
- electronic and computer works
as well as any combinations other than above mentioned.

9. By submitting to the festival, the composer or publisher must agree to make available all necessary performing materials (including scores and parts, special uncommon instrument(s), audio/video materials, etc.) for the performance of the work, if selected.

10. All entries will be treated with great care. The ISCM and the organizer, however, will not take responsibility for the loss or damage of scores, audio / video or any other submitted materials.

11. The submitted scores and materials will only be returned if this is expressly requested and the cost of postage or freight has been paid. Delegates of the National Sections and Associate Members may collect submitted materials at the 2008 General Assembly.

12. Submissions which do not meet the conditions or deadlines specified above will not be considered.


FINANCIAL CONDITIONS

The organizers of the ISCM World Music Days 2008 will bear the costs of performance of the selected works. In the case of a composer having special requirements concerning the performance ( e.g., specific performer or specific instrument), the expenses should be covered by the composer, National Section or Associate Member.

The authors of selected works will be guests of the festival. The expenses of their stay in Vilnius will be covered by the organizers for the period of 3 days.

– Section canadienne de la SIMC–

La Section canadienne de la SIMC lance un « Appel de candidatures » aux compositeurs et créateurs sonores pour l’édition 2008 du Festival de la SIMC qui se tiendra à Vilnius, en LITUANIE.

Un jury formé de trois compositeurs et d’un président non-votant choisira 6 œuvres pour représenter la Section canadienne en 2008. Ces œuvres seront soumises au jury international pour sélection / exécution éventuelle aux Journées mondiales de la musique.

Le jury canadien portera une attention particulière aux œuvres reflétant le « thème » retenu pour ce festival par la Section lituanienne : « InBetween – la nouvelle musique comme zone de transit et position intermédiaire ». Chaque candidature devra inclure une description écrite du lien entre l’œuvre et ce thème – les soumissions ne comportant pas cette description seront considérées comme incomplètes.

Le jury international accordera la préférence aux œuvres soumises par les sections nationales, et il n’y a pas de frais pour la soumission d’œuvres à la Section canadienne. Les œuvres choisies par la Section canadienne figureront sur un CD promotionnel parrainé par la elle, à condition que l’autorisation appropriée ait été accordée.

RÈGLES TOUCHANT LE DÉPÔT DES CANDIDATURES

1. La Section canadienne de la SIMC peut soumettre jusqu’à six œuvres dans le cadre d’une soumission officielle. Les compositeurs des pays membres de la SIMC peuvent présenter leur candidature auprès de leur section nationale.

2. Les compositeurs – surtout ceux de pays non affiliés à la SIMC – peuvent également soumettre une œuvre (une seulement) à titre individuel auprès du jury international. Selon les règlements de la SIMC, des frais d’inscription de 50 euros sont exigés (vois plus loin « Mode de paiement »). Le paiement doit être décrit comme étant des frais d’inscription aux « Journées mondiales de la musique 2008 de la SIMC ». La candidature sera disqualifiée si la SIMC n’a pas reçu le paiement des frais d’inscription à la date de tombée indiquée.

3. Les candidatures déposées par les éditeurs devront obligatoirement inclure une lettre de consentement du compositeur.

4. Un compositeur ne peut déposer plus d’une candidature, que ce soit dans le cadre d’une soumission officielle par des membres de la SIMC ou dans le cadre d’une soumission individuelle. La préférence sera accordée aux soumissions officielles.

5. Les candidatures sont acceptées dans tous les genres de musique :
- orchestre, orchestre à cordes
- grand ensemble de type sinfonietta
- musique de chambre (de 1 à 8 instruments)
- musique vocale et chorale
- œuvres multimédias, interdisciplinaires et installations sonores
- œuvres électroniques et par ordinateur
ainsi que toutes combinaisons autres que celles mentionnées plus haut.

9. En soumettant une oeuvre auaux festival, le compositeur ou l’éditeur accepte de mettre à sa disposition tout le matériel nécessaire à l’exécution de la pièce (y compris les partitions et le matériel d’orchestre, un (ou plusieurs) instrument inhabituel, des éléments audio / vidéo, etc.), au cas où elle serait choisie.

10. Tous les dossiers seront traités avec grand soin. La SIMC et les organisateurs, cependant, n’accepteront aucune responsabilité en cas de perte ou de dommages aux partitions, documents audio / vidéo ou à tout autre matériel soumis.

11. Les partitions et documents soumis ne seront retournés que si le compositeur en fait la demande expresse, et si les frais de poste ou d’expédition ont été payés. Les délégués des sections nationales, de même que les Membres associés, pourront recueillir les documents qui auront été soumis lors de l’Assemblée générale de 2008.

12. Les candidatures qui ne respecteront pas les conditions ou les dates de tombée spécifiées ne seront pas prises en considération.


CONDITIONS FINANCIÈRES

Les organisateurs des Journées mondiales de la musique 2008 de la SIMC assumeront les coûts liés à l’exécution des œuvres sélectionnées. Toutefois, si une œuvre possède des exigences particulières pour son exécution (par ex. : interprète ou instrument spécifique), les dépenses encourues devront être assumées par le compositeur, la Section nationale ou le Membre associé.

Les auteurs des œuvres sélectionnées seront les invités du festival. Les organisateurs assumeront les dépenses liées à leur séjour à Vilnius pour une période de trois jours.
