2008 ISCM Canadian Section Selected Works

The ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) Canadian Section is pleased to announce the composers and works selected to represent Canada for 2008.

A committee consisting of Allison Cameron (Association of Canadian Women Composers), Brian Current (Canadian League of Composers), and David Ogborn (Canadian Electroacoustic Community) met recently in Toronto and selected six concert works and one large installation work as Canada’s submission to the international jury of the 2008 World Music Days in Vilnius, Lithunia. Selected works will also be included on the Canadian Section promotional CD available to presenters, performers, and others.




THEME

“in-between – contemporary music as a transit zone and middle ground”

In keeping with the 2008 host nation’s theme, the following works have been selected for 2008*:


Rose Bolton
Breakdown of System (and Malfunction in 7 Different Ways) (2004)
For baritone saxophone in E flat, percussion, violin, piano or bass clarinet in B-flat, percussion, violin, piano

Omar Daniel
The Flaying of Marsyas (2001-2002)
For violin and suspended musician with live electronics

Aaron Gervais
Culture No. 3 (2006)
Flute (et piccolo), clarinette en si bémol, cor en fa, trombone, piano, percussion, violon, alto, violoncello, contrebasse, instruments de percussion: cloches de danse indienne, 2 triangles, 2 cymbales suspendues, caisse claire, caxixi brésilien, tambour de basque

The ISCM Canadian Section is pleased to be associated with the above works, and we look forward to hosting selected composers at the World Music Days Festival in 2008. For more information on the ISCM activities, the artists and their works, please review the websites listed below and/or contact the ISCM Canadian Section representatives. We will endeavor to promote and disseminate these works with the hope that they will receive performances in Canada and abroad, in addition to the World Music Days and CD printing.

*please note that the committee identified several other quality works that unfortunately were not selected due to the limitations imposed on each ISCM country’s submission. Composers whose works were not selected by the Canadian Section are still welcome to submit directly to the international jury (fee applies for individual submissions). Deadline for individual submissions: July 31, 2007 (Postmark date).
